Working late revising the first 3 chapters! I am really liking how things are coming along with this story. We are currently at 4.3k words. Excited to keep working on it! Here is a preview of the first chapter.

The strong scent of coffee filled my sense of smell as I walked into my favorite café. There was a line as usual, for this spot was known to be one of the best local coffee spots in this small, southern Michigan town. After a few short minutes, I was front of the line.

The regular.” I said to Anna, who I knew outside of the shop and talked to frequently. She was actually one of my only friends. Being a 30-something in such a small town made it hard to meet new people.

Coming right up, Chanterelle!” She winked at me.

I can help who’s next!” she chimed as I walked away to stand and wait for my coffee.

For as busy as this place always seemed to be, the service was reliably fast. I got my iced caramel latte after about 2 minutes of waiting and walked to sit in a corner booth near the window. It was my usual spot. I loved staring out of the window at the old-timey town as I worked on my latest novel. The buildings were all connected together, different neutral color painted bricks on each one that blended in so well with each other. Each section with a million stories, over a hundred years of memories made inside them. I always liked to ponder who inhabited them throughout those long years and what their lives were like.

I pulled out my laptop from my bag and opened it, only to find it was dead! Damn, at least I didn’t forget my charging cable like last time. That old thing seemed to always need to charge. I thought about how I needed a new laptop before reaching in my bag for the chord. Once it was plugged in and ready to go, it was time to start writing. About an hour and a half passed, I was so into working on my latest novel that I lost track of time. My phone started ringing and I jumped as I snapped out of the writing trance I was in. The call was from an unknown number.

Hello?” I answered. “Who is this?”

Is this Chanterelle? Chanterelle Robinson?” An unfamiliar voice asked from the other line.

Yes. May I ask who is calling, please?”

This is Deputy Jared of the Dundee Police Department. Do you have a moment to speak?”

A weird feeling fluttered across my chest. I never liked dealing with cops. I actually really disliked them.

Uhm.. yes. This is her. What are you calling about? I am a bit busy right now, so please try to make it short.” I said. I did not want to be on the phone with this man for long.

"I'm afraid I have some difficult news regarding your husband, Alan. There was an incident off M-50 about an hour ago. I’m truly sorry to be the one to inform you. If you’re up to it, I need to ask you a few questions."

What kind of questions do you think Deputy Jared has for Chanterelle?
